Arm-of-the-Sea Theater 2010 Esopus Creek Mask and Puppet SuiteArm-of-the-Sea Theater will present its annual outdoor performance spectacle The Esopus Creek Puppet Suite in Saugerties on August 13th and 14th.

© 1997 Roy GumpelDrawing from history, ecology and contemporary events, the Puppet Suite fuses visual enchantment with live music in an allegorical work of mask and puppet theater. Audiences of all ages and persuasions will find enjoyment in its low-tech immediacy and mythic reach.

This year's story hatches from a Swirling Cosmic Egg, leap-frogs through events in early evolutionary history, and eventually catches up with the antics of a tribe of hominids who uncover a treasure buried deep under the Earth. When that treasure turns into a raging monster, the hominids must reckon with the consequences and struggle to save their home.

The production is written and directed by Patrick Wadden, with stunning visuals by Marlena Marallo, and irrepressible music by maestro Dean Jones and friends. The show is performed by Arm of the Sea company members, together with volunteers from the theater's extended community. All proceeds from this year's Suite will benefit Arm-of-the-Sea's arts-in-education program, which brings performances and workshops to over 10,000 students each year.

© 1997 Roy Gumpel"In our age of hyper-linked communications, this ancient form of storytelling can still deliver a punch; perhaps because it exists in such stark contrast to the daily media deluge," muses Ms. Marallo, the company's artistic director. "... and we are not trying to sell you anything."

The 2010 Esopus Creek Puppet Suite will begin at 8 pm at Tina Chorvas Waterfront Park on East Bridge Street, in the village of Saugerties. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children and $25 for a family of four. Tickets are available at the park entrance on the evening of the event. Audience members are encouraged to arrive early and bring lawn seating. Saugerties is located at Exit 20 on the NYS Thruway; follow signs to the Waterfront Park. If one of the evenings is rained out, the performance will be rescheduled for Sunday evening, August 15.
